Featured Product: Metropolis Patterson Two Speed Cranks

By Rick Smith

The first time I met the FSA guys they brought along a bike equipped with this crank.

I’ve always been a fan of simplicity in bikes (er…sometimes) so I rode it around the block a few times to try it out. These things are pretty cool, and the potential applications are numerous.

Got a derailleur hanger-less track frame, but want one more gear for hills? Easily accomplished, it’s now a dinglespeed.

Want a 22 speed bike with a single speed look? Throw a Shimano Alfine 11 speed internally geared hub in the back and a Patterson in the front and you’ll have an incredibly wide gear range for any situation.

Want a totally ridiculous 60 (!!!) speed bike? Put a Sram Dual Drive rear hub with an 11-36 cassette on it on the rear wheel. With the 3 internal gears in the back and 2 internal gears in the front you’ve got one! Such a bike would have the widest gear range ever imaginable, I’m hesitant to even try to do the math on it. The handlebars might be a little busy with 2 front shifters but it should totally work! (You could do downtube shifters for the Patterson too, since any shifter will work).

Only downside to these is they are a little heavy (as with all internal gear stuff), but who cares, it’s not going on your race bike is it?

Here’s another great review of these, from Portland Bike Shop Joe Bike. There’s also lots of great information and videos on the company site: pattersonbike.com.

Cyclone has these stocked in 160, 170, and 175mm. Part #’s CR8700, 8701 and 8702. MSRP: $299.99.
