West End's Simple and Professional Approach

Posted: June 29, 2011 in Uncategorized

Recently Erik Deeter and I visited a new addition to the local Portland bike scene, West End Bikes. Immediately upon arrival I knew that they were doing something right; the store was beautiful, organized and decorated with gorgeous bicycles of varying kinds. As we walked through the store with one of the co-owners, Mark Ontiveros, I was completely assured that my assumptions were correct.

My first observation was how smart their retail items were placed throughout the store as well as admiring their selection of product. We were shown a very cool pair of cycling shoes made by Quoc Pham that were very simple and practical. They’re leather with a rubber sole. Simple as that; but guess what…you don’t have to worry about changing your shoes or slipping on covers just to walk into a coffee shop. And they’re quite stylish as well!

Pretty awesome.

The store also has a really great selection of tools and accessories located right in the entry way carrying brands such as Kryptonite, Portland Design Works and Knog. I always appreciate when retail stores layout their merchandise in a way that gets me in and out when I only need 2 or 3 quick items.

In the north corner of the store they have a full mechanic station so you can bring your bike in for a quick fix or a full tune up. West End has an extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff that is more than willing to help with anything you need or answer any questions.

Before we left, Mike France – also a co-owner, showed us their fitting studio upstairs in a loft that overlooks the entire store. Using cameras that help monitor your positioning on the bike they can fit you perfectly to your brand new bike you just picked up in the store or the bike you’ve been riding for years.

Although West End is a Specialized concept store they also carry other extremely reputable brands such as Calfee, Wilier and Beloved. Something on display that caught my eye was Mark’s absolutely gorgeous Calfee bamboo bike. You could easily walk in the store and stare at it for quite some time before even beginning to check anything else out.

Bottom line: if you haven’t checked out West End Bikes (1111 SW Stark St., Portland, OR) do yourself a favor and stop by. Here at Cyclone Bicycle Supply, we’re very happy to have them as a customer and love seeing local businesses thrive.
